Medication Dosage

The dosage charts below are for Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Cetirizine, and Diphenhydramine. All are commonly used medications that can be purchased over the counter without a prescription.


Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Dosing Chart

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Notes:

  • Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing, if at all possible.

  • Acetaminophen can be taken every 4 hours (but not more than 5 times per 24 hour period)

  • Do not use under 3 months of age without consulting your physician as we would often like see your infant if they have a fever. Exception: If your child develops fever that starts within 24 hours after the 2 month vaccines and lasts no longer than 24 hours in duration.

  • Do not use with any other product containing acetaminophen.

  • Acetaminophen can be taken at the same time as Ibuprofen.



Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) Dosing Chart

Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) Notes:

  • Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing.

  • Ibuprofen can be taken every 6 hours.

  • Do not use under 6 months of age.

  • Ibuprofen can be taken at the same time as Acetaminophen.



Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Dosing Chart

Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Notes:

  • Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing, if at all possible.

  • Treatment of nasal or eye allergies, hives, itching, and other allergic symptoms. This will not work for the common cold.

  • Give once at time of allergic reaction and then daily as need after consultation with physician.

  • Do not use below 2 years of age, as it is not FDA approved.



Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Dosing Chart

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Notes:

  • Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing, if at all possible.

  • Generally, Cetirizine is a better antihistamine to use for almost all situations as it is not sedating and lasts longer than Diphenhydramine.

  • Diphenhydramine can be given every 6 hours.

  • Do not give to infants <1 year of age, and use with caution in children < 2 years of age because it is sedating.

  • Do not use for the common cold as this will not work.
